Imagine....

Our students create some wonderful pieces of art both in and out of class. Sharing work within this blog will allow family and friends both near and far to appreciate the hard work that takes place in art class. This is also a great spot for students to check in to make sure they know what the next sketchbook assignment is and to share ideas on their current assignments.

Piles of ....

This time of year, it is expected that leaves would be the ending to "Piles of...", but no, not quite yet. The leaves have just begun to turn colour and so it will be a little while longer until those leaves fall off branches and need raking. For this week's sketchbook assignment, you will draw a pile of shoes. Find a pile of shoes, sneakers, flip flops, boots, any kind of footwear and draw them, paying close attention to angles and dimension. Some of you may be tempted to line up some shoes; neat and orderly is not part of this assignment.   http://inyourshoesblog.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/shoepile.jpg

I have prepared for each of you a page filled with double 'oo's..... You will receive this in class on Monday. Then... have fun creating drawings from these! When your page is finished, please glue it into your sketchbook for our next class....
Pencils should not be used for this assignment, a black fine ink pen or marker is preferred.

Sketchbook assignment....melting...

The word melt brings thing like snowmen, icicles, chocolate and even cheese to mind. For this week, students will draw an object melting. How does your object transform as it melts? Does it melt evenly or just in one corner? Remember to put a border around the sketchbook page and be as precise as possible (don't just draw drop shapes coming off your image). This is due Monday, September 24th during class.

HB pencils

When I think of school I see pencils, lots of them.... Those brand new, freshly sharpened pencils seem to be calling out to students, "Pick me up, I want to know what I will say today". As the year goes on, the pencils begin to show the wear and tear of a mind determined to master new math problems, write creative stories and take a drawing and transform it into something totally different just by using a pencil.

What would happen if a pencil could be transformed into a new thing? Our first 11/12 level assignment this year takes that simple, yet important tool, and transforms it into something new...perhaps a butterfly, drawn using short pencils, long pencils, stubby, curved and tiny pencils. One thing will become clear though, the entire picture will come from using that simple yet so important tool...the pencil. I look forward to seeing what our students create.
